Any info on NGC 2440?
Does anyone have any information about this star, like type, evolutionary stage, distance, period, year discovered, etc?
First of all, it’s not a star, it’s a planetary Nebula. It’s central star is a white Dwarf named HD62166. It was discovered in 1790 by Herschel. It’s over 7,100 light years away.
A white dwarf is a star that is in it’s last stage of life. The nebula is the stars outer layers that were blown off in a nova explosion when the star reached the age when gravitational pull won out over the pressure of the gasses to expand. After the explosion what’s left is the dense hot core of the star which hasn’t got much fuel left to burn and will slowly cool and burn out over the next few thousands of years.
