Don’t Darwinian principles make it inevitable that artificial intelligence will supersede human beings?
1. The Darwinian principles I have in mind are:
–”survival of the fittest” (a phrase Darwin endorsed though he didn’t coin it)
–”The war of nature” (Darwin’s phrase)
–Competition for scarce resources (what “survival of the fittest” is all about)
First of all, to undergo Darwinian evolution, artifical intelligences would have to be able to produce progeny that weren’t exactly like themselves. Secondly, in order to eliminate humans through Darwinian competition they’d have to be competing for some of the same limited resources that humans need. Finally, they’d have to get out from under our control, and evolve or develop their own motivations.
We can envision science fiction scenarios, such as the Terminator or Matrix series, where those things happen, but it’s hardly inevitable.
